FIRE SAFETY NEWS

Mineral oils are highly flammable and are a serious source of fire hazard in high temperature environments and applications close to open flames or red-hot metal parts. The risk is further increased by the rapid and aggressive Ignition rate of mineral oils. Today mineral oil dangers present industries with very real major risks including disruption in operation, plant shut down, and threats to worker safety. With QUINTOLUBRIC® products, this risk can be reduced and managed preventively.

How to Prevent Hydraulic Oil Fires

Because hydraulic systems are highly pressurized, flames from a hydraulic oil fire can spread over dozens of meters. On factory premises, such a conflagration will unavoidably reach cables or other combustible material, which will catch fire and be rapidly destroyed. It is therefore essential to assess the risks related to hydraulic oils in order to ensure sufficient protection methods. In fact, the risk of an oil fire can be completely eliminated by shifting to non-combustible hydraulic fluids or adopting electrically or pneumatically operated equipment.

Ignition of Hydraulic Fluid Sprays by Open Flames and Hot Surfaces

Pressurized oil in hydraulic systems presents a considerable fire hazard, particularly where ignition sources are present. When hydraulic oil is released under pressure, it often results in an atomized spray or mist of oil droplets that may extend as far as 10 m from the break (Bowen & Shirvill, 1994). The oil spray can be ignited readily by hot surfaces, such as heated or molten metal, electric heaters, open flames or welding arcs. The resulting fire usually is torch-like, with a very high heat release rate, and can cause significant property damage, even loss of human lives. The frequency of fires involving hydraulic fluids has prompted the introduction of fire-resistant fluids in hydraulic systems.

QUINTOLUBRIC® PRODUCT LINE

HIGH WATER CONTENT FLUIDS – HFA

QUINTOLUBRIC® 807

Designed for use in water hydraulic systems with reciprocating piston pumps. Provides effective protection against rust and micro-organism growth. Has a strong affinity for metal and provides effective boundary lubrication between sliding steel surfaces.

Main Applications: Hot, cold and tin rolling and pickling

  • Stable in high temperatures and freeze-thaw conditions
  • Strong affinity for metal
  • Provides effective boundary lubrication between sliding steel surfaces
  • Very resistant to hard water soap formation
  • Protects against corrosion, bacterial and fungal growth at a minimum concentration
  • Reduced environmental impact

WATER GLYCOL FLUIDS – HFC

QUINTOLUBRIC® 702-46 RD and N 702

Optimizes performance in hydraulic systems where fire-resistant fluids are required. Prevents ignition that could occur in hydraulic systems operating under high pressure through sudden line ruptures or fluid contact with a high temperature source.

Main Applications: Casting, die casting, iron casting, pickling and tempering

  • Superior liquid and vapor phase corrosion protection
  • High viscosity index
  • Excellent shear stability
  • Excellent chemical thermal and hydrolytic stability
  • Factory Mutual Approved

SYNTHETIC WATER-FREE FLUIDS – HFD-U

QUINTOLUBRIC® 888-46 and 888-68

Replaces anti-wear, mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids used in applications where fire hazards exist. For use in systems with a maximum reservoir temperature of 70°C (150°F), in combination with partial refreshment by system leakage. Also used in environmentally sensitive hydraulic applications without compromising overall hydraulic system operations.

FACTS:

Main Applications: Casting, die casting, iron casting, hot and cold rolling, pickling, tin rolling, tempering, galvanizing, mobile equipment, belt take-up hydraulics, hydraulic couplings, power generation, tunneling, and press hardening

  • Global formulation
  • Excellent shear stability
  • Best-in-class fluid life
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Factory Mutual Approved

MINERAL OIL vs. SYNTHETIC WATER FREE FLUIDS

Performance on a 1,652°F (900°C) tilted hot plate

QUINTOLUBRIC® 855 and 865

Vegetable ester based fluid designed to replace anti-wear, mineral oil based hydraulic fluids as well as vegetable-based fluids and polyol esters. For use in systems with a maximum reservoir temperature of 70°C (150°F), in combination with partial refreshment by system leakage. Has a higher viscosity index compared with mineral oil makes it ideal for use at a wider temperature range – has good cold start-up properties and offers a higher viscosity at increased temperatures.

Main Applications: Slab caster, Hot and cold rolling, Pickling, Tin rolling, Tempering, Mobile equipment, Belt take-up hydraulics, and Hydraulic couplings

  • Good lubrication properties
  • Compatible with most standard seal materials
  • Energy saving because of low density compared to other HFD type fluids
  • Does not compromise the overall hydraulic system in environmentally sensitive hydraulic applications
  • Factory Mutual Approved
